I ran it to the same issue when updating to .95.1a RC06 and through some digging in older posts I found the original google drive link which was being used to distribute the mod by the developer. I downloaded it about 2 weeks ago as it was a must for my play through as the old version for 0.95 did not work for .95.1a.

The game stops displaying the engine exhausts (or it flickers) when the game starts getting unstable. Also when ships are destroyed some of them drop my frames down to like 10 FPS. I can move the camera away from the wreck and my frame rate jumps back to normal. Alphas are very useful, but attract a lot of attention from the Hegemony and the Path when installed in a colony. Trading them in for money and rep directly to a station commander is generally a good use for them. Useful is probably the wrong word. Gamma cores are pretty useful as your colonies need less resources.
